Entelect Challenge

This years Entelect Challenge was based on the game mechanics of Plants vs Zombies and themed as the classic, Red Alert. The Challenge brought together novice coders and experienced professionals, as they competed against each other by coding a bot to challenge all other bots. The goal of the Challenge is to bring the software community together and demystify the world of coding and AI.

The mini-playoffs series and staggered strategy component that was introduced last year, was again very successful. The Challenge again increased its numbers to a new record high and interest seems to still be growing.

For the first time this year the Challenge also expanded to Universities by having the University Cup. This was to get more students involved and gave them the chance to compete without spending too much of their study time. Not only did the winning team win a gaming laptop for each of its members, but the University also won a 3D printer for their labs.

The finals took place at the first ever Comic Con Africa. The winner, Louis Lotter, was awarded the grand prize of R70 000. He fought off all the competition in the finals that placed 2nd and 3rd respectively. Louis' Rust bot calculated over 200k possibilities each round, which really paid off in the end.

Although C# was the most popular language, Java and Python3 where very close contenders. And in the end it was a Rust bot that won the Challenge.
